When Is Father's Day?

Father's Day is celebrated on different dates throughout the world. The most popular date for Father's Day is the third Sunday in June. In the United States, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year. In 2023, Father's Day in the US falls on 18th June 2023. In the UK, Father's Day is on 18th June 2023 also.

In Spain, Italy and Portugal, Father's Day is celebrated on March 19th which is the Feast of St. Joseph, the patron saint of fathers. Whereas in Germany, Father's Day is celebrated on the same date as Ascension Day, May 18th 2023.

In Scandinavian countries, Father's Day was originally celebrated on the third Sunday of June. However, it was moved to ensure it wasn't too close to Mother's Day and to increase sales in the lead up to Christmas. In the majority of Scandinavian countries, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in November. The only Scandinavian country who kept the June date was Denmark.

Who Invented Father's Day?

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is believed to be the founder of Father's Day. Sonora campaigned for Father's Day after Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. In 1909, Sonora tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother's Day for fathers. She was one of six children raised by a single dad, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. It is believed that Sonora originally suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father's death as the official date. However, organisers did not have enough time to make arrangements meaning that it was delayed until the third Sunday in June.

The holiday gained momentum in the US, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge pressed the government to recognise Father's Day.

When Was Father's Day First Celebrated?

Father's Day was first celebrated on June 19th, 1910 in Washington. Originally Father's Day was not well received with one florist commenting that "father's haven't the same sentimental appeal that mothers have". Father's Day also had a lack of support among men at the beginning. Men felt that gift-giving and flowers did not celebrate their masculinity. In the 1920s and 1930s, a movement attempted to abolish both Mother's Day and Father's Day in favour of a single holiday, Parents' Day. Despite these efforts, Father's Day is now a national holiday celebrated by many across the world.
