What Is A Coronation?

A coronation is a formal ceremony in which a monarch is crowned and given regal or ceremonial powers and privileges. It involves placing a crown or another emblem of authority on the head of the monarch. The coronation ceremony usually involves a procession or presentation of gifts. The monarch is presented with royal objects such as the Crown Jewels. This year, we will witness the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the first coronation to take place in Britain since Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Which Crowns Will Be Worn During The King's Coronation?

King Charles III will be crowned with the solid gold, 17th century St Edward's Crown. It is an extremely heavy crown which is only used for the coronation. The St Edward's Crown was made for Charles II in 1661 and features rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnets, tourmalines and topaz. Gemstone jewellery, particularly in crowns, has long been popular among royalty.

The King will also wear the Imperial State Crown which is set with 2868 diamonds as well as pearls, emeralds and sapphires. The Imperial State crown is the crown which the King Charles III will exchange for St Edward's crown at the end of the ceremony.
