Who Invented Father’s Day?

The concept of honouring fathers has roots in various cultures and traditions throughout history. However, the modern-day Father's Day celebration stems from a remarkable woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in the early 20th century United States.

A Daughter's Love Inspires a National Tradition: In 1909, Sonora, from Spokane, Washington, was deeply touched by the single-handed efforts of her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children after his wife's death. Inspired by the existing Mother's Day celebrations, Sonora passionately advocated for a dedicated day to honour fathers.

The First Father's Day Celebration: Sonora's dedication paid off. The very first official Father's Day celebration took place in Spokane, Washington, on June 19th, 1910, honouring her father.

A Journey to National Recognition: While the initial celebration was heartwarming, gaining national recognition for Father's Day took several decades. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in the United States. Six year’s later, President Richard Nixon signed it into law on April 24,1972.
