The Meaning of Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious gemstone found in Afghanistan, Chile, Mongolia, and Italy. It has been prized for its intense blue colour since prehistoric times and was famously used to decorate the death mask of Tutankhamun. In The Renaissance, the stone was ground down to create the pigment ultramarine and was used by Michelangelo to give the Sistine Chapel ceiling its deep blue tones.
Lapis Lazuli is September’s birthstone, a modern alternative to sapphire. It is one of the oldest known gemstones and features in the Old Testament. It’s associated with royalty and symbolises strength and courage. The stone is often likened to a night sky full of stars because of the gold flecks in the blue gem.
