In the Renaissance, the stone was ground down to create the pigment ultramarine and was used by Michelangelo to give the Sistine Chapel ceiling its deep blue tones.

It s associated with royalty and symbolises strength and courage. The stone is often likened to a night sky full of stars because of the gold flecks in the blue gem.
